The Roman Praetorian Guard:
Establishment and Initial Credo Introduction The Praetorian Guard, an elite unit of the Imperial Roman army, was established by Augustus in 27 BC. This brief conversation explores the establishment of the Guard for worthy or lofty purposes and examines their initial credo. Protection and Stability The establishment of the Praetorian Guard was indeed for worthy and lofty purposes. Augustus aimed to create a reliable and loyal force that would protect the emperor and ensure the stability of the Roman Empire. The Guard's presence was intended to deter potential threats and maintain order within the empire. Civic Duties Beyond their protective role, the Praetorian Guard also engaged in various civic duties. They served as emergency firefighters, assisted in crowd control at public games, and occasionally participated in the arena. These activities underscored their commitment to public service and the well-being of Roman society.
